Feeling Green (Almost)

Coral Brown

After our first win last week against Nomads 2s we were ready to show St Ives what the South Ladies’ 2s were made of!

With no sub we knew we would have to be strong from the off and make a solid start. However, after five minutes the opposition had made success from several short corners. Ley, stepping in as captain in Jen's and Cath’s absence, rallied the team well, taking two blows from rising balls. Lottie almost got a green card but after a cracking save from Ali in goal, some smart play across the back between Alice and Polly, and tight pressing from the mids and forwards we won several short corners before half time.

We tried a variety of tactics, with both Esme and Anna getting some good hits off but unfortunately none were good enough to get the ball in the net. Although under good pressure from us, St Ives managed to break and get a short corner, and clearly put their well practiced technique to use again, making it 3-0 to them at half time.

A quick half time talk and pack of Jelly Babies should have revved us up for the second half but we were slow to get going. Luckily St Ives were too but they did eventually score fifteen minutes into the half. That seemed to give the whole team a second wind for the last twenty minutes.

South 2s' demonstrated some great movement off the ball and confident passing. Lots of triangle play and great transitions coming forwards from defence through the mids to the forwards. Vanessa and Lauren were unlucky to not get anything but both Lottie and Hannah supported well, keeping the pressure on the St Ives defence. Alas the final whistle went on one final push from South, ending the game 4-0 to St Ives.

Despite the score line a clear improvement today in the Ladies 2s' game with lots of things to carry forwards to next week's match. It was difficult to pick MoM this week with nominations being shared around the team. Alice got the deciding vote for a solid presence in defence, accurate passing to players and space and great movement forwards to support. LoM went to Lottie for almost getting a green card but also doing very well to not let it affect her game.

Great game everyone!
