Fun in the evening sun

Jan Brynjolffssen

The M5s completed their pre-season programme with an encouraging performance in the autumn evening sunshine at St. Ives.

The low but strong sun was a bit of a problem for the match, actually, as it was setting as we played. Even with South changing to yellow instead of purple, when playing towards the sunset players from both sides still looked black silhouettes, leading to some oddly misplaced passes from both sides. One of these may have been the start of the attack that gave South a 1-0 lead at the break, a counterattack being launched that ended with Henry firing home from high in the circle.

South had looked the stronger side in the first half, but it was after the break where we really took control, adding three more goals and having opportunities for more than that. Jelley got the second from a penalty corner, George was on hand for the third after an attack down the right had initiated a bit of a goalmouth scramble, and Jordan got the best of the lot when he was on hand for a simple finish at the end of a swift and flowing attack.

The main positive from the day was 4-0 did not in any way flatter the M5s – we had outplayed the Saints. Who are in our Division this season. Talking of which, that gets underway next Saturday. Bring it on!
