Umpire's eye view

Cambridge South Men’s 1sts used practically every second available to them to ensure that their first points of the ’22-’23 season would come in a batch of three rather than just a singleton.

The hosts had early pressure only to fall behind to a scrappy goal, the ball deflecting off South defenders into the path of a late arriving Uni player in the left channel, who flicked high past Dave Potter. South responded through a penalty corner, the students ‘keeper blocking the initial effort only for Oscar Serra to react sharpest to the dropping ball to volley into the corner of the net.

The second half saw South mostly on the front foot as they probed for a winner. Their chances looked diminished when a late sin-binning meant they were to end the game with just 10 on the field, but short-numbered South still pushed forward to win a last-minute penalty corner. This was cracked into the bottom corner by Player-of-the-Match Ed Doust, the ball hitting the back of the net with just two seconds left to play.
