Get your balls out girls

Jenny Taylor

0:0 means my usual tactic of asking Jess to describe the details of the goals for me to have something to write down won’t be of any use, so I thought I’d instead give a summary of what each of the fabulous squad that was Saturdays L2s was up to.  So here goes in alphabetical order:

Anna - Well deserved PoM for some smashing tackles, running her socks off, and passes up the line

Boo - once again shoo shoo’d every ball and player away from her and told the defenders when they marking was lacking, even did the splits once to stop a ball (we will pretend the whistle didn’t blow before that because it was so awesome)

Carrie - Joint PoM, just as well deserved; showed off her skill for centre back (Nic, you and I have competition) and kept the man marking together with some strong communication

Ella - Awesome debut at senior hockey, played the inner position wonderfully and linked up to the front (have now learnt why it’s called inner, thanks Soph)

Erin - came between two night shifts to help us out in midfield, was amazingly awake and put great pressure on Uni and linked up those triangles, thanks so much!

Jenny - didn’t know what an inner was and made the mistake of admitting this to the team, told the girls to “get your balls our”, and didn’t have time for drinking from a bottle that wasn’t easy to drink from while wearing a mouthguard. Well deserved LoM. Also got a few aerials over their high press and only one straight into them

Jess - Put high pressure on their centre backs and got some great balls into the D and to the posts, had a smashing short corner or two that their goalie saved

Juliette – had a sneaky late arrival at the pitch but made up for that by being on it in the game, some speedy runs into the D and shots on goal

Maddy B – helping out wherever needed, even spotted in defence for a bit and did a fabulous job in every position

Maddy T – fab DJ, fab player, fab girl, what more is there to say? Wonderful of her to join us for the match, always a pleasure

Rebecca - Ran so much I genuinely don’t understand where she gets her air from, did some awesome prescanning and always provided an option, kept the middle together when there was some confusion

Rhian – showed such calm composure on the ball, bringing it up the line and smashing it through the gaps

Soph - Threw her stick rather dramatically, showed that she can also play in defence and is just as skilled, showed off her usual amazing tackles and runs, passed out on the bench in Cantabs

Overall I am very proud of these girls, 13 players holding strong against 16 young and fast Uni players. We had a lot of opportunities up front but also showed off probably the best defending we’ve done all season with amazing communication throughout the team. PoM votes were spread out over many of the players which just goes to show how well everyone played but was taken by two of our defenders, Carrie and Anna for holding us in the game.
