Let’s not be compliant

Izzy MacDonald-Parry

The L1s and a good number of the L2s (thanks v much for coming, literally couldn’t have played without you) headed to Norwich. Nice of us to be able to show the L2s the sights of the A11, to which we’ve become so familiar with. We went in without expectations, Norwich had been climbing the table in recent weeks and now sat only a few points below top, so it was going to be a tough ask with only 12 players.

Plans from the outset - retain the ball, work hard but sensibly, have fun and if all else fails go half court. We did a lot of defending, but didn’t need to go half court at any point which was good. Norwich worked us hard, but we responded well, retained possession for the most part and ended the first half 0-0. We had a few chances and looked dangerous on the break. At half time, Jenny told us not to be compliant*. Alice and I, in a state of non-compliance, ended up being the reason for Jenny’s green card. Jenny then got lemon for the green card while Alice and I got off scot-free. Jenny did also nearly decapitate a dragon so she wasn’t completely hard done by. Emma got some LoM votes too for turning up late but always glam. Half time discussions, in addition to compliance chat and how wonderful we all were, centred around the Norwich centre mid, who was pretty good and annoyingly ran through us all a few times, we decided she needed marking out of the game and I got that fun job.

Stars of the game were our defensive line and Boo. They tackled, stepped, cleared and made impressive saves. Notable mention to Alice too who picked all sorts out of the air from centre mid and distributed really well. MoM votes were split between Jenny T, Alice, me and Lizzie. But it was Lizzie who came out on top with MoM for a very good debut at half back.

Norwich scored in the last 2 minutes through a (what the Ipswich men’s team on the sideline described as harshly awarded) short. Frustrating to lose in the last minute after such a close game, but we can’t fault the team’s effort. Teas were inside this time rather than in the car park which was a nice treat, Lizzie debuted an excellent fleece and there was a fresh wave of excitement over finding out the chairs spun round.

*Jenny actually meant complacent.
