The Derby Match

The derby match: Cambridge South L2’s vs Cambridge South L3’s. The 2’s somehow had a very familiar team – they may have stolen some of our players...!

We managed to experience all seasons during this match – from grey clouds, to hail, to bright sunshine.

The day started off on a high when Connie (me) decided to bike to Wilberforce Rd instead of Long Rd. By this point, I had basically already given myself lemon of the match, given that I actually live on Long Rd anyway!

Once I arrived, a very thorough warm-up took place, and we had our team talk from Tim. He told us there was no pressure on us, and our aim was to keep our attack high to pressure their defence.

The first 5mins was awesome, with lots of our possession, and we worked well as a team. But then the 2’s scored. With our heads high we carried on fighting, but then they got another one... and another! Feeling a bit low, we still kept going. Our mood was lifted when Steph scored a corker from top D. Some other star players were Lucy for great work on the wing, Indi for strong passes, Anna for some speedy runs down the pitch, Emma for fab marking and Rhi for tackling the opposition and stealing their sticks.

Half time came and we were 3-1 down. Tim gave us advice to keep moving on 16s, and lead in front of their players. Taking on this advice, we went into the second half strong, and Zoe, the goalie, did some amazing saves. Suzi (POM) was fearless and got in front of powerful shots to goal, nearly breaking her stick in the process! There was some skilful dribbling from Charlotte and Tess, and solid defending from Ginny. But sadly, they managed to score another. Our aim now was to keep possession. With two minutes to go we won our first short corner – could this be our chance to score? No, annoyingly not. The game ended with a 4-1 result to the 2’s, and we hugged and shook hands afterwards.

The day ended with way too much pizza for us and Suzi getting awarded POM for great defensive play and rocketing balls out at 16s. A special mention to Hannah M, for having a fab game for the wrong team! Despite the disappointing result, we all enjoyed the match - well played girls!!
