M1 1-1 Pelicans Mens 1

Will Townley

Two teams challenging at the top of the league. 1st v 4th, the champions league song playing as we walked on the pitch, the stage was set for (an early Christmas) cracker.

It was a cagey match with both teams struggling to break each other down. The first chance came for Peli’s after a good turn in the middle released a bouncing pass to back post. A diving deflection was excellently saved by Max (possibly even better than the save in the warmup). Subsequently, a botched clearance led to the first short corner of the day which was placed into the back of the net. 1-0 Pelicans.

South didn’t ’let it go’ and fought back into the game and were much better in the second half but struggled to break down their defence. With not many chances in the game, shorts would be crucial. We won a series of shorts in the second half before Oscar hit the ball cleanly against the backboard to equalise. We kept pushing but couldn’t quite get a second goal.

There was some heart in mouth moments for both sides, including when Peli’s were breaking quickly and Stu may (or may not) have taken out one of their players. There were many good performances across the team but an extra special shoutout goes to Alex on debut who played out of his skin, was reliable, assured and rigid? In defence.

‘Life is a highway’ and the draw builds on a positive start to the season as some of the lads enjoyed their journey back through the local drinking holes. Starting at the Fenman in King’s Lynn, described by the opposition team as a ‘brave’ trip it was definitely the cheapest pint on the journey. The Whalebone in Downham market followed, then the Cutter Inn at Ely before we got back into Cambridge and the Old Ticket Office. We broached a variety of topics on the trip, with discussion occasionally getting ‘toxic’ at times, before we got into a crucial conversation on dad points, we all agreed a new system with MDad’s having equal to or more than 7 points on the following scale:
7 points - you have a child
7 points - you are married
5 points - major pet with SO
5 points - mortgage
5 points - allotment
6 points - Over 40
4 points - Over 30
1 point - Over 25
3 points - living with SO
1 point - team captain or ex team captain
1 point - minor pet with SO
1 point - frequent dad jokes
1 point - regularly misses opportunities to go out with the lads
1 point - over 100 caps for South
