So long, farewell

Jess Reed

The sun shone bright, down at Long Road

As the L1s prepared for BIG HYPE mode

To take on Dragons in their biggest game yet,

For let me remind you, a win could cause a promotion upset!

Excitement and nerves charged the changing room air,

As captain Jenny’s team talk even made young Ella stare,

Inspired and eager we were ready to play,

Especially after nailing the Evergreen warm-up sway!

“So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good night
I hate to go and leave this pretty sight”

The first half was underway and out we lead,

With us a little on the back foot to start, it must be said,

A well drilled Dragons pressed us high,

We had answers though, for it was far too soon for me to cry!

Standout defending from our back five,

Kept Dragons out and our dream alive,

A tremendous save from Loopy kept us out of trouble,

And we went in at half-time with the score line level.

“So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, adieu
Adieu, adieu, to yieu and yieu and yieu”

0-0, half-time, Tim got out his board

And gave us the chat that needed to be heard,

Fuelled with squashies and fizzy sweets,

We stepped back out to determine our fates!

We upped our game and came our roaring,

With international standard passing and linking,

from Sophie, Katie, Lucy and Evie,

we looked like scoring, but not so easy!

Lily, gave us her trademark run and fly towards goal,

Creating havoc and winning a foul,

Penalty stroke awarded and Izzy stepped up,

Alas, the ping of the post meant the score line stayed put!

“So long, farewell, au revoir, auf Wiedersehen
I'd like to stay and taste my first champagne”

The teams were well matched

and the battle was truly on now,

Kate had a strike on goal soaring top corner,

Until the oppositions leg got in the way and prevented celebrations further!

We rallied hard and worked out how to press back,

Chasing them back on the break and linking in attack,

Kate, tracking back, got a stick to the hand,

‘Wear it Kate!’ chorused the crowd in demand!

5 mins to go and Dragons with the ball top D, too easy,

The dreaded sound of the backboard came leaving us feeling queasy,

Kim pushed forward, desperate to score,

But sadly, it was not to be, our promotion dreams shattered for one year more.

“ So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye
I leave and heave a sigh and say goodbye
Goodbye”

For me it was a particularly emotional team circle,

As today marked my final game in the purple,

I cried in the huddle as the realisation stormed,

That I will miss you all so much and this epic team we have formed!

At least Kates Mum brought us lemon drizzle for tea,

And an extra one specially for me!

Thank you, Kates Mum, Spectator of the Match pound for pound,

And thank you girls for being the best bloody bunch around!

“The sun has gone to bed and so must I
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye”
