Cambridge's South Mixed team went to Rutland on a perfect late summer afternoon and topped the day off with a win. South signalled their intent with a goal inside the first minute when a dangerous run and cross from Holly found Wilco in the centre of the D, whose reverse stick shot found the bottom right hand corner of the goal. The first half was a back and forth affair with both teams getting decent pressure but unable to find the net. The South defence of Rhi, Ian and Julie generally kept their opponents well contained with Lino only required to make a couple of saves. Meanwhile Jack was sweeping up the loose balls and making some slashing breaks through the opposition. Towards the end of the half Rutland put sustained pressure on the South D but without reward. The second half started as the first had finished with Rutland having more pressure though neutralised by some tenacious tackling and good passing to John and Dan wide out. Rutland eventually equalised from a short corner; in trying to clear the initial shot South's captain managed only to dink the ball around Lino charging out to clear it himself, presenting a Rutland player with an empty goal to tap into. South kept breaking dangerously with Bhav and Louise particularly linking well down the right. It was a run down the right and powerful cross from Bhav that set up South's second as James Raikes blocked the Rutland keeper's clearance and poked the ball in during the ensuing melee. South were kept ahead by a couple of great saves by Lino as Rutland's strong midfielders started to try to assert themselves. South's third goal came during a scrabble in the D when James stopped Jack's shot and reverse stick flicked it into the opposite corner. There was a chance to make it four but James wasn't able to finish one-on-one with the keeper. Rutland pulled back a goal from another short corner to make the last three minutes slightly nervous when the initial shot bounced clear one of their midfielders who finally had space at the top of the D to get a clear shot and managed to nutmeg Lino with a powerful strike. But South held on, helped by a final mazy run from Holly which put the pressure back on Rutland.
