Cambridge Nomads XI 9 - 2 Cambridge South Mixed XI
H/T: 2 - 0
Scorers: Rob Barton (2)
MoM: Jack Chalk
South Mixed played a last summer game against Nomads as a warm up to season proper.
It was clear from the off that Nomads had a strong side though they were generally handled well by Jack sweeping with Rhi and new girl Mariana playing solidly at wing backs while Lino dealt capably with the few shots that were managed. Meanwhile Graham and Sanjay were proving a handful for the Nomads midfield.
Nomads did eventually score when short corner was cleared and a Nomads player prodded home. South continued to pressure but struggled to find space in the D although James and Bex linked to fashion a couple of chances without reward, and there were some dangerous breaks from Marianna and Charlie down the right hand side. Shortly before the half Nomads scored a second from another short with a clean strike squeezing inside Lino's post.
Unfortunately breaking the mixed team tradition of half time Jelly Babies had disastrous results (aided by some confusion introduced by the half time substitutions). Nomads scored two goals in rapid succession immediately after the turn around. Rob Barton pulled one back after a some neat stick work in the D (reverse stick, naturally). While South battled on the tide ran against them and despite some good moves forward, Nomads quickly hit on the break repeatedly and were often able to outnumber the defence, leaving Lino alternating between great saves (including a penalty flick) and being helplessly out-numbered. As the evening and score line became ever more gloomy South stuck to their task and finally got some consolation with a couple of minutes to go as Rob tucked away a second goal.
Team played: Lino di Lorenzo, Louise Gutteridge, George Wych, Ian Glover, Ellie Raffan, Rhiannan Williams, Julie Sadler, Jack Chalk, Sanjay Agarwala, Bhavdeep Virdi, Mariana Garcia Moritan, Graham McCulloch, James Raikes, Rob Barton, Bex Baker, Charlie Orrock
