Men's 2nds lose to March Town 3
Veterans v Newmarket Veterans : Match Cancelled
Cambridge South Men's II 1 - 2 March Town II
H/T: 1 - 1
Scorers: John Hawkes
MoM: George Wych (Excellent defence in the face of the March forwards)
LoM: Nick Bristowe (Responsible for a two day team hangover!)
South set off to March on Sunday, eager to put the previous day's disappointing reverse behind them.
The match began brightly for South, with the midfield quartet creating a number of promising openings, and new forward Will Jones linked up promisingly with John Hawkes and Rob Barton. Wingers Bhav Virdee and Kev Rowland were firing in some decent crosses from either side, but the March defence held firm.
Up the other end, March were always committing many bodies forward in search of the opening goal. George Wych in particular along with the rest of the defence were largely keeping the March attack at bay, until a fired in cross from the left was placed over Ben Buckley's dive at the second attempt.
Unperturbed, South poured forward, and won a fair number of short corners. One of these led to the equaliser- John Hawkes cleverly lifting the ball over the outstretched keeper following an original save from a Nick Bristowe shot.
After half time, it was clear the game was going to become stretched as both teams' midfields committed forward to attacks and struggled to track back, as a result of the previous day's (and Friday night's!) excursions. South to their credit fired some more dangerous crosses into the D, and had one glorious one o one opportunity. March were held at bay by the excellent tackling from Wych & co.
However, on one attack down the right midway through the half, March found the breakthrough. A pass was cut back from the byline and the March attacker pushed the ball firmly past the keeper's right.
This pressed the South into action again, and the attack poured forward. However, despite numerous promising openings, South could not find the equaliser their play deserved, and suffered their second consecutive defeat in two days, and with it, any final lingering hopes of promotion. This fails to take the gloss off a very promising season however (which began with safety as the objective), and three good performances in the last three games should see them finish the season strongly, hopefully in the dizzy heights of 4th place.
Team played: Ben Buckley, Ian Glover, Manu Bhardwaj, George Wych, Nick Bristowe, Dave Aston, Jack Chalk, Bhavdeep Virdi, Kev Rowland, John Hawkes, Rob Barton
