Men's 1sts scrape a win against St Ives 2

Cambridge South took to the field against St Ives looking to end a run of 4 league games without a victory.

South took the game to their lowly opponents straight from the off, with the wide players of Johnson (F) and Virdi looking to get round the back of the opposition to create chances for the forwards. Many chances were created in the opening quarter, including a gilt-edged one for Average (needless to say he missed from 5 yards) before Chris Pearson netted home from the edge of the D after a neat team buildup.

The lead should’ve been built on, but South took their foot off the perennial gas, and Ives were soon level. Their “experienced” centre forward slammed home a snap shot at the top of the area to take his side level.

South were jolted into action again, and soon re-gained the lead. This time Mark Williams was the man of the moment, placing his shot with perfection on to the defender’s outstretched stick to take it into the top right hand corner. 2-1.

However, South relaxed again, and St Ives, always dangerous had a chance to equalise from a short corner. An excellent save from Shahbaz unfortunately landed right at the feet of the St Ives attacker, who pushed the rebound into the unguarded net.

At half time, the point was made that South were creating numerous chances and a third goal would come, but that they really needed to keep up their discipline and concentration to keep the opponents out. Sure enough, chances did flow South’s way in the second half, and John Hawkes “burst the net” with a slammed strike from a short corner. Or at least that’s how he described it.

The game became more and more stretched late on as St Ives pushed for a winner, and it has to be said some indiscipline nearly cost South dear as many a short corner was conceded. However George Wych was alert as ever on the runout to ensure that no further goals were conceded. South now need a victory at Spalding next weekend to ensure the promotion dream stays alive

Makes you wonder how badly everyone else must have played?
