Men's 1sts beat St Neots 1

In the absence of the skipper, who had apparently got a better offer on the slopes of the Alps, Cambridge South set off for their away trip to St Neots hoping to record back to back wins for the first time since November.

The game started in a scrappy fashion, but was soon lit up with a fantastic piece of individual skill. In the left back position, Dave Aston received a pass, and strove to throw an airial so high it cleared the Neots side fence. Considering this fence was not dissimilar in height to Great St Mary's church, this was no mean feat, however it was deemed lemonable by his jealous teammates. Shocking.

Back to the match, South were beginning to string a couple of opportunities together- some eye-of-a needle passes from Hawkes setting up some fantastic opportunities which went to no avail. So Jonny H took it upon himself to nail a strike into the bottom of the goal following a short corner. One nil.

The rest of the half was pretty routine- a couple of smart stops from short corners by Steve Parker but otherwise pretty cagey, until Dave Aston, in the corner, played a great reverse clearance down the line.....except he hooked it square and infield and was lucky to see it cleared up by his defensive partners. This drew a significant groan of "what are you doing!" from Hawkes but perhaps more amusingly, the Neots skipper berated his own attacker for "not anticipating it."

Jokes aside, at half time, stand in skipper Williams stressed that South were playing well but just needed to keep their discipline and the second goal would surely come. As the second half wore on, it was clear that Neots were tiring and the pace of Watson, Johnson Chalk and Claes was beginning to open them up. Watson had a baseball swing shot canon off the bar but the score still stood at one nil.

And after a few cagey moments at the back, the second goal came. If it were a girl, it would have been Megan Fox. If it were a footballer it would have been Lionel Messi. Described by some as a "rare but sexy strike" (personally it didn't make me orgasm, but each to their own) and others as "the greatest goal in club history," Bav picked up a loose ball at the top of the D and unleashed Damien Rice canonball of a shot into the top of the net. If you were there, you would remember this goal for the rest of your life I guarantee you. It was certainly much better than John's goal.

Relief spread through the side after the second goal- only five minutes to go, and South saw out the match in relative comfort. They now have 5 matches left till the end of the season, and 5 more professional performances should see them complete another strong season in Div 3NW.

Well done to all.

Airial over the fence, reverse stick down the line which actually went square to the Neots striker
