Men's 2nds drew 0-0 with Ely City 2

South re-emerged following the winter break keen to continue the good work from the first half of the season.

However it was Ely who started the sharper in the first half, with some impressive breaks down the left and right flanks. South's defence were severely tested, but the back four of Monckasaurus, Manu Bhardwaj, George Wych and Matt Readman (who produced a fine individual display despite coming up against stronger than usual opposition) held firm, with Monckasaurus and Matt in particular producing some fine last ditch tackles when called upon. When Ely did penetrate the South defence, Ben Buckley made some fine saves when called upon- a point blank save at his left hand post being particularly memorable.

Although they were perhaps lucky to go in goalless at the break, South re-started the match determined to put in a strong second half performance. The midfield and attack started to cause Ely problems with quick snappy intelligent passing. Goal poacher extraordinaire Rob Barton deflected a Bav Virdee cross just past the post, and a growling short corner thump from The Monckasaurus was deflected by an Ely foot just past the post. Rob Leigh and Tim Clapp were also causing problems to the Ely defence, and South more than equal to their opposition.

It looked though like this effort could almost be in vain, as at the death Ely won a final short corner. However, a last ditch swipe off the line from the Monckasaurus (aided by Manu Bhadwaj's kicking foot) ensure the game finished nil-nil. Favourable results elsewhere at the top of 4NW means that South are still in the promotion hunt, but the next two matches now take on an added importance.
