Men's 2nds score a last minute equaliser against Alford & District 1

Skegness is a long long way from Cambridge, the Men's 2's decided to break up the long haul journey with a team breakfast at Little Chef on the way up. This was a good idea until Neil and Ron got themselves lost on the final stretch, but as we set off just after sunrise we still made it there before pushback, which happened to be in the afternoon.

The team started the match off well, marking the forwards and playing some nice passes which created some chances and a couple of short corners. The opposition had a few strong players with some nice skills, but were largely kept in check for the first period. About 15 minutes in came the first goal from Lukas, hitting the ball very nicely on a reverse stick hit into the bottom left corner, following a good pass across from the right from Neil.

Alford kept battling but were denied any decent chances on goal due to some nice clean tackles, the pick of the tackles coming from Nick Venner in centre midfield, who cleanly poached the ball off of his opposite number. Unfortunately South went into the break level at 1-1 following a skilful dribble by their right wing, who shot from a tight angle, hitting the post that ricocheted out to another forward to slot home.

In the second half South won a quick short corner following a Bhav lob forward to Lukas who was fouled in the D. Unfortunately the short corner broke down and Alford countered, resulting in a goal within a minute of the restart.

Alford gained confidence with this goal and started putting the pressure on. Their forwards were mixing up their positions making it difficult for the South defence to organise a good enough resistance. Inevitably another goal came where their centre forward created enough room in front of Dom and Colin to smash home into the bottom left corner.

South had their heads down at this time, however up stepped Bhav to turn the tables and the flow of the game, with some nice composed play in the centre. The comeback commenced when Dom Nelson slotted home a goal following a spell of good pressure by South. A few short corners provided some good chances where South were left frustrated. However, with a minute to go Bhav received the ball from the left side, he had 3 defenders in his way but managed to create some room to flick the ball in from near the penalty spot to tie the game.

Tom Anns put in a valiant effort with the pink straw and umbrella in his beer at the pub afterwards, but he was no match for the mighty Pigeon, whose evidence was compelling. A few examples included getting lost on the way, refusing to say what filling he had in his pre-match sandwich, getting told off by the manager of Little Chef for sitting on the table, and driving down a train line
