Men's 1sts beat Rutland 1

You only needed to take one look at the table to realise that this match was huge. Massive. Could there have been more riding on one match? That was certainly the thought of the umpires, and quick thinking from Mr Brynjolfssen in ensruing a prompt 12 noon pushback meant that league rules were followed to the T. Rumours that Graham had requested the push back to be delayed in order to get one final good luck kiss were unconfirmed.

South did start brightly however and some early pressure yielded a short corner. Time for South to unveil their new original routine, stop it dead, and whack it in. Highly effective. This gave Paresh his first goal of the season, and leaves him one shy of about 200 people in the club defenders goal king race.

South continued to press in the remainder of the first half and played pretty well, constructing numerous attacks and winning several corners. One of these led to the second goal- shame it came at the wrong end. A cross into the Rutland d was cut out, and they countered with pace before rounding Steve and slotting a cool finish between Graveling’s legs.

Half time the message from captain Graham was clear, continue doing what we’re doing and the goals would come. South came out and scored immediately after the break. I cant remember it in too much detail but do remember it was an epic goal, finished by an all round decent chap. So well done whoever you are.

Third goal was another great move, again I forget how it was finished but as Jack scored it I imagine the twirly spinny thing was involved: even if it wasn’t it sounds more interesting in the match report.

4th goal was definitely good. PP owned the Rutland attacker with an “on your knees” block tackle special, before looking up and putting in a perfect Mousa Dembele style pinpoint pass from behind the halfway line straight to the Ginger Ninja in the D, who wasted no time in putting a first time finish past the Rutland keeper.

The opposition were pretty disheartened after this, and there was time before the final whistle for a fifth, with another bustling team move being finished by Snooker under the keeper’s body, having waited very patiently on the P spot for the best part of 5 minutes to finally receive the ball in order to do this.

All in all a good performance, probably our best for about 3 months or so. Three wins from the last five games will see our best total ever, but that elusive top two finish will probably have to wait for another season.
