Men's 1sts beat Cambridge Nomads 2

After the dizzying heights of the thrashing we gave 2nd-placed Newmarket 1sts last week, it was somewhat painful to be involved in what must surely be the lowest standard league hockey match CSHC Men's 1sts have played in quite some time. Nomads have had a rough time of it over the last couple of seasons and it really shows. For everyone's sake I think its best that we don't dwell on this match.

However, Chris Pearson did finally get the hat-trick he'd been desperately seeking of late, three well timed deflections taking him to seven goals in the last four games. We'll ignore the fact that the umpire had already blown for a short-corner when Chris scored his first - and then inexplicably and very generously allowed South the goal anyway.

Paresh also scored from another fine short-corner strike. A goal-a-game defender - now that's better than Average...

At some point in the second half, as Steve's eyelids were beginning to droop, the defence kindly let one Nomads attack through to ensure Steve woke up and got at least one touch of the ball. Other than that it was all one way traffic, systematically broken down either by the Nomads sweeper's feet or by South's own eagerness to Dribble All The Way To The Goal. In short, the result was never in doubt and the fact that only four goals were scored may be attributed to the fact that South's other two attacking work-horses, Rich and Laurie were both absent; Rich unbelievably because he was on a Hen Do, and Laurie apparently suffering from a near-fatal bruise.

Incidentally, this win takes us past our previous best-ever points total in Div 3NW. This is officially our best ever season. So at least there's that.

In hindsight, the Red Bull match teas were probably the highlight, with mountains of pizzas followed up with more left-over birthday cake (thanks Georgie!) than we could possibly eat.
