Men's 3rds beat Wisbech Town 4

A return to winning ways, but one where we were pushed unexpectedly hard by a Wisbech side struggling near the foot of the table.

We looked the stronger outfit in the first half, and opened up a two goal lead via the usual source. The opener came when Rob pounced on the loose ball in the circle, and hammered it (strong side) into the far corner. Rob doubled his and his side’s tally with a reverse stick sweep that deflected multiple times off Wisbech players on its way home, including a desperate attempt to clear off the line that only succeeded in finally knocking the ball in.

It could have been three when a sweeping move involving Olly and Chris W sprung right-winger Tom Anns clean through. Tom committed the ‘keeper and slid it past him... and wide of the far post. Pity. [For any second teamers reading, yes, really, Tom played up front. And he looked pretty lively up there as well. Who knew?]

We opened the second half looking to put the game to bed, but the third goal never came. In fact, as the half progressed it began to look that if the scoreline was to change, it was more likely to be Wisbech who did so rather than ourselves. The last ten minutes saw them camped in our half of the pitch, getting into shooting positions and winning shorts. It needed the calming presence of Chris between the sticks, dealing coolly with the efforts Wisbech put on target, to keep the scoresheet blank.

And, well, not a great deal more happened. The defence and midfield held up well until those panicky last ten minutes, but our attacking moves petered out repeatedly in the last third. Not exactly vintage stuff, but 3 points is 3 points. It keeps us involved at the right end of the table, 3 points behind leaders Louth. Who, co-incidentally, we travel to face next week.

Two reasons; i) crucial saves late on to preserve his clean sheet and the sides victory and ii) turning up at the pub, swaying the Captains casting away from his previous choice of Olly

Appeared more interested in rooting through a bin than the pre-match huddle. Some claim about a ball having landed in it. No, me neither...
