Men's 2nds lose to Ely 2nds

South got off to an enthusiastic start, closing the ball down well and keeping good structure. Good pressure up the middle of the pitch won South a few short corners, however unfortunately none were converted into goals. An early effort for Lemon was made towards the end of the first half by Chris Pearson who, upon South winning a short corner, inexplicably retrieved the ball and threw it to the other end of the pitch, towards a waving Shabhaz. A further Lemon-effort was made midway through the first half by 1s player Laurie, by turning up in a Porsche.

The match went into half time 0-0.

South started the second half with initial enthusiasm however unfortunately conceded a goal after just a few minutes from a short corner. South heads dropped and Ely jumped on the chance to score again just minutes later. South held their determination after the restart and persisted with closing down Ely and moving forward well on the break.

A further Lemon effort was made by Chris Pearson in the second half. While making a break down the right wing he inexplicably threw his stick in front of him and kicked it down the pitch. Perhaps he confused his stick with the ball? We may never know.

Half way through the second half the pressure eventually produced a goal. After a cutting run by guest player Chris Pearson ended in a lifted through ball to Nick, all that was needed was a cricket-style forward drive to put the ball into the middle of the net from the top of the D. An average goal that I won't mention again.

Ely then scored again, but it was probably a scrappy goal, and easily forgotten. Anyway, I'll not bore you with trivia and move on.

The Ely pitch was then blessed with what many present described as 'the finest hockey moment I will see in my lifetime'. ''I can't wait to tell my grandchildren in 40 years time that I was there to witness it'' said one spectator. ''I'm just walking my dog, I wasn't watching'' said another. Yes, I am talking about the iconic moment that centre back Oli Culley scored a goal. Following good pressure down the right hand side of the pitch by the right midfield, the right defence, both centre mids, the left mid, and probably the right back as well as Shabhaz, the ball was pushed up to the Ely base line ready to be crossed to the near post. Now quite what Oli was doing so far up the pitch will be the subject of a post-season inquiry, but this should not take away from the spectacular, effortless grace with which he swept the ball over the line from half a yard out.

The shell-shocked Ely now felt the need to resort to underhand tactics by drawing a foul in the South D. A break down their right wing saw Ron having to chase back and make an awkward tackle, unfortunately resulting in a penalty flick for a push in the back seen perhaps only by the umpire. A low flick to Shabhaz's right made it 4-2.

The last 5 minutes of the game saw South pushing Ely hard and never giving up on getting something out of the fixture, however it wasn't to be.
