Promotion March halted

Mark Williams

We thought it was all over, it is now!

South needed a win to keep the pressure on the top two in the league but were undone by two short corner strikes  in a closely fought and competitive match with March.

South started strongly and had their better moments early on, winning the game's first short corner, that required an excellent low save to prevent a goal. Shortly afterwards South were rewarded for their early dominance with a well worked goal for Chris Pearson. Starting from a  free hit inside the 25, Williams worked the ball to Parsot who's outstanding strike into the D was turned in superbly by Pearson who had timed his run across the face of goal  to perfection.

As the half progressed South began to lose their grip on the game and didn't take the required amount of care with the ball, meaning the whole team had to work extremely hard to win back possession, a tough ask with no substitutes available. After gaining the upper hand  in the middle of the park March were rewarded with a goal from a short corner, a real disappointment for South who had largely prevented Match getting near the D from open play.

For much of the  second half the game descended into a scrappy stop-start affair that neither team seemed to be particularly enjoying. March enjoyed the bulk of possession but again, the South defence limited March to a handful of half chances and as always, Steve Parker was on hand to snuff out any attacks that resulted with an attempt on target.

South were always dangerous on the break with McCulloch, Chalk and Pearson looking to have their men for pace. A few half chances presented themselves but despite finding  good positions, South just couldn't find the right touch at the right time.

Eventually March's majority share of the possession told, they were awarded a pair of short corners in quick succession and their successful strike from the second was enough to win the game.

South kept going and would have earned a point from Pearson's late shot but were denied by a brilliant sliding save from a March defender.

A disappointing result for the team but a decent performance from the 11 players who were available.
