M5 0-1 St Neots Mens 4

The M5s were unlucky to be on the wrong end of a very tight 1-0 scoreline against St Neots 4s. Both sides created as many chances, although the 5s possibly created more from open play, whereas the Saints won more shorts.

However, despite numerous good breaks against a Saints backline that played very high up the pitch, South's composure in the box let them down - whether this was down to the lunchtime start meaning everyone was thinking about the prospect of teas at The Red Bull or simply all this talk of a transfer window confusing them into thinking they were playing football rather than hockey - both James M and also (annoyingly in his quest for Goal King) Simon on at least two occasions let a simple sweep home fall foul of bad footwork at the wrong time.

Despite the off day upfront, the backline played magnificently - Douglas, Ian, Ky, David and debutant Nick (who was narrowly beaten by Owen in the MoM voting afterwards) were resolute throughout and also combined well at 16s to set us up nicely for our forays forward. James and James in the centre were working well with Andy and Owen in the wings and John D was providing a good link to drop deeper and help work the ball around the danger men in Saints' side.

Just a shame that feet (James and Simon), broken sticks (John D) and a shameless attempt to claim a goal from a "ghost touch" (Douglas - narrowly avoiding the Lemon, thanks to the Saints player who mistook Ian E for a springboard and then talked himself into trouble with Ron) cost us the chance to get something from the game that the teams play deserved.
