Patience brings rewards

Lyn Wood

A few faces returned to the fold this week after some jet-setting around the globe. We were also boosted by the presence of Naomi and Jess, and had the luxury of a sub.

Naomi kindly volunteered to be in goal – with the premise that we tried to keep the ball away from her as much as possible. As a team we agreed that this would be a cunning plan and that we would try to do this!

The first half was dominated by South with chance after chance. Lauren made some great runs down the right getting into some excellent positions. The midfield dominated the opposition leaving Pip and Lora at the back spectators for a considerable part of the game.

Emma F and Ann also made inroads through the Newmarket defence on the right and Jess skipped around them in the centre making some excellent hits into the danger zone, just needing a deflection to score. Unfortunately the first half remained scoreless but the pressure was mounting on Newmarket.

The second half started with a Newmarket pushback and Lyn caught them napping, tackling the defender who had received the ball from the pushback. This initial attack fizzled out but Jess got the ball again in midfield and passed it back to Lyn on the sixteen yard line. She ran forward waiting for a tackle which never came and got to the P spot in the D before sliding the ball into the bottom corner. 1-0 South.

This seemed to settle South’s nerves and the pressure on Newmarket continued. The second goal was a bit special. Jess hit the ball from the sideline half way into our attacking half. The ball flew into the D where Lauren was perfectly placed to deflect the ball into the Newmarket goal leaving the keeper standing still. Apparently it was completely deliberate!

The pressure continued with excellent runs up both wings from Jen and Lauren. Newmarket struggled to clear their lines with a good press from the forwards backed up particularly by Dani, Liz, Jess and both Emmas.

Lyn at some point tried a new tactic and simultaneously tried to beat the most number of falls per game, which is currently held jointly by Jules and Ania. Following another great cross into the D, she crashed straight into the goalie with both of them ending up on the floor. The goalie however has a bit more padding and the Lemon award was therefore guaranteed, especially after falls two and three.

We continued to dominate the game with Newmarket only occasionally getting outside their half and any attack was ably dealt with by Pip and Lora at the back. Short corner followed short corner. Jess had a goal disallowed from one of the shorts as the ball hit the top corner but then scored a cracker, with a direct hit from a short flying into the bottom corner. 3-0.

The final goal came from another short with Emma South getting her first goal for the club after Jess slipped the ball to her at right slip, sweeping the ball into the bottom corner. 4-0.

Well played everybody – this was a really good result which has also maintained Lyn's 100% winning record as stand in captain this year. Thanks to Naomi for going in goal and we're pleased to say that we managed to make her wish come true.

For excessive falling over and trying to crash-tackle the goalie.
