M1 0-8 Letchworth Mens 1

Will Benedikz

Due to 'other commitments', South were forced to field a scratch side comprised predominantly of the 2nd team players who had worked so well the previous week against Wisbech, but also including two players borrowed from the opposition. In contrast, Letchworth used players from all of their first four teams who provided a mighty challenge.

The first ten minutes showed that there may have been more to the contest than a first glance suggested, and South battled doggedly in defence. However, after keeper Will Benedikz conceded a penalty flick, which was duly converted, there seemed no way back. The defence, lead by captain Jim Sutcliffe and comprising Andy Pouch, Andy Bleach and David Bridge, continued to tackle well to contain the Letchworth forwards. They were admirably supported by John Greaves from midfield. Youth played a significant role as most of the home team's attacks were launched from midfield breaks. Going forward, centre-half Sanjay Agarwala looked dangerous and both he and Andy Lewis made strong runs down the left and centre of the pitch. Alas none could be converted, although stand-in striker Hannes Roux did come close. Three further goals came before half-time, all bundled in from goalmouth melees resulting in close range shots.

The second half started positively with South showing plenty of attacking spirit. This, however, left the defence exposed to waves of Letchworth attacks. The defence and midfield proved to be equal to the majority of these and tackled like men possessed. It took two crisply taken short corners, involving hard, fast passing in the circle, to re-open the scoring. It was no consolation that Letchworth had failed to achieve anything of the same standard in the season to date. Another breakaway goal followed before the scoring was completed as a Letchworth forward rounded the keeper to slot into the open net. Letchworth's most dangerous players were the youngest members of the team, who had a pace advantage over the South defence.

As the final whistle approached South mounted a minor comeback with Roux having a number of close-quarter chances following good work down the wings, but it wasn't to be Souths afternoon.

A harsh final score although the result cannot be disputed. It wasn't an important match, with just pride at stake, but some important lessons can still be drawn ready for the next half of the season.
