Indoor Team draw an open game against North & South

Cambridge South fought hard in a very open game where the lead yo-yoed between the sides, but were ultimately left frustrated having been in front going into the last couple of minutes. Having seen Shabaz make some good early saves at his near post from Tom Hickson's dangerous flicks at penalty corners, South conceded a fairly soft opener as players were sucked towards the ball leaving a simple overload. James Cobbe and Manu Bhardwaj then combined well in the middle of the pitch and created a chance that James Featherstone nearly got to, but as was a feature of the first half the final pass kept eluding the attackers' lead runs. By half-time scores were level though as Dan Cross took the ball past two players before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner low to the left of the advancing keeper. Indecision at the top of the D from a series of short coners was typical of the way South had not quite clicked in the first half.

South fell behind again early in the second half to a slick short corner that went between the two defenders on the line. But minutes later, Cross stayed calm in the D again to finish in spectacular fashion by lobbing the keeper with a perfectly placed flick. It will take something spectacular to prevent that from being goal of the season.

With the wind in their sails, South pushed forward more and Jim Thorpe's clever ball left Rich Morgan in space but he could only find the put the ball into the side netting of the keeper's pad. Soon though a lead from Paul South was spotted by Dan Cross and Paul's precision ball angled back into the D found Morgan attacking the near post. A sharp turn gave the room for a low shot through the keeper's legs. As players tired on both teams the game became a very open affair and South had a goal disallowed as James Cobbe's shot was adjudged to have been slotted home as the ball was still in the air. With South trying to press the game high up North and South stole the ball and quickly countered, with Harry Bell moving the ball wide to the left of the onrushing Shabaz before sliding it in for a well-taken equaliser.

Both sides came away from the game reflecting on missed opportunities but all in all it was a game played in the right spirit and leaves the two teams in close competition for the last remaining place in the semi-final playoffs.
