Mixed Team lose a well-balanced game against Blue Green Zeds

South played good hockey in a good natured and closely contested match against a friendly and skillful opposition and were unlucky to come away with a defeat.

The first half was one of tidal shifts with the Zeds starting with most of the pressure but not managing to get into the D to take a shot as the defence of Ellie, Lou and Ian, expertly marshalled by Ron kept them at bay, whilst Rob was able to pick the pocket of their dangerous looking midfielders and set up attacks with Georgie linking well, along with some darts from Wilco. Slowly things began to shift and South more pressure and were unlucky not to score after a couple of mazy runs from Rob as his pull backs couldn't quite be pushed in by James or Julie or were saved on the line. Meanwhile Zeds won a short corner from an attack on the break and got the ball in the net only to see it ruled out for not leaving the D. South's one short of the half was unlucky not to produce a goal as Alice's straight strike beat the keeper only to be saved by a defender on the post.

In the last ten minutes of the half though it all went wrong. First when one of the Zeds midfields managed to get free on the break and despite being pushed wide angled his shot just inside the near post.

Two more followed as Zeds managed to get in first to follow up on good saves from Phil.

South turned round 3-0 down feeling harshly treated by the scoreboard and looking for an early goal. A slightly rejigged defense pairing JB and Ron as centre backs, and a tweaked forward line to try to convert more chances with three up front. The tale of the half was one of reasonable Zeds pressure without much penetration into the South D and South hitting back on the break, Rhi, Rob and Hayley combining well down the left wing, and Alice cutting through the defence with some raking balls into the corners for the wingers.

Eventually Zeds managed to break the deadlock scoring from a short.

This spurred South on and although late in the day there was a flurry of attacks. Rewarded when Rob picked up a misdirected Zeds clearance, charged into the D and slipped to James to slot home from the penalty spot under a despairing goal keeper. Whilst Premier League strikers will dash to the corner flag before diving in celebration, James was content to collapse where he was with a cry of relief/surprise. A second followed shortly afterwards with an attack touched by every forward on the South side as the ball was battled inch by inch in from the edge of the D before squeaking through the goalie's pads allowing Rob to reach round and prod home.
