The Score Doesn't Show the Brilliant Hockey Played by South

For the first league game of the season the Ladies 2s headed off to Peterborough, to face a strong opposition who came third in the upper league last year.

With a team full of players who normally play in attacking positions, our play started off a little haphazard, but as the first half progressed everyone settled down and the passing and play became more fluid. Unfortunately, the opposition still managed to sneak a few goals around our rusty sticks and we we finished the first half three down.

After a strong team talk from Cath at half time, we went out with our game faces on into the second half. Some brilliant defending by Emma and Laurie managed to slow down Peterborough's attack and with Steph and Coral working hard down the left side of the field, South were able to move the ball up the field and deliver it to the forwards, leading to some strong crosses into the D. Unfortunately, Peterborough skilfully cleared all of our attempts on goal.

Despite playing some really good hockey and fighting hard throughout the second half, our early season legs grew weary and the youthful opposition snuck in a few more goals bringing the final score to 5-0 to Peterborough.

Despite the disappointing score line we were really pleased with how we progressed and improved as a team throughout the match. There were a number of commendable performances, reflected in the numerous nominations for MoM, which deservedly went to Coral for giving 110% throughout.

A special mention should also go to Ali for some brilliant saves in goal! LoM nominations were also tough this week as no one really made any bloopers on the pitch, so it went to Lucy for turning up with next to no kit!

For still not having a shirt (despite having played for South for over a season) and wrong socks.
