So Near Yet So Far

Once again the L2s turned up determined to win…have fun. Despite the arctic wind. And with the promise of Red Bull pizza afterwards - quite the motivator!

It was a game of two halves. Let's just talk about the first one. Uni 3s were just as well drilled as expected but great play down the left wing, helped along by Laurie's big hits, kept the pressure on. Sadly the Uni scored but so did we. Nearly. So, so nearly. If only getting into the D was awarded points. Oh how a 1-1 scoreline at half time would have been so much better. Instead, the Uni caught our defence napping (or still in shock that the rest of the team had been in the attacking D) and it was 2-0.

Still the half time assessment was a well deserved "we're really pleased with ourselves". Gone was the L2s of early season thrashing, here to stay the L2s who enjoy frustrating the stronger teams. Really the coaches should thank us for the good run around we give their surprised ladies.

The second half? Perhaps our minds were on the upcoming Super Saturday excitement (Cath) or the prospect of ultimate X Factor fandom (Dani), but suddenly it was 5-0 with the Uni demonstrating how to finish attacks. Loopy earned a well deserved MoM for some superb saves that had one uni player screaming "I WANT A GOAL! GRRRRR!"

Special mention goes to Guy for his John Cleese-esque umpiring signals and newcomer Naomi W (we need nicknames, seriously!) for going to Long Road instead of Wilby (Lemon) but also playing a superb running game. We love recruiting footballers!

Pity that's the end of the season, really. Who knows how many well worked goals were just around the corner for us? I would predict 100; shame it's untestable. Instead, we'll join Scotland in becoming rich with wooden spoons. They should come in handy in next season's weekly bake offs to be judged by some willing umpires after the carrot cake (Hannah) and chocolate Guinness cake (Laurie) preview this week.

For going to Long Road when we were playing at Wilberforce Road.
