Ladies' 1sts win the Division 1 League Cup by beating Cambridge Nomads 2

Cambridge South Ladies 1sts followed the example set by their second team in completing a league and cup double with a two goal victory over Cambridge Nomads in the Cambs Cup Division 1 final in a tight, hotly contested game.

Nomads came out of the blocks fastest and for a while, despite the clamouring from a mass of side line supporters, South were pegged back in their own twenty-five. It took a determined drive out of defence from Hayley to take South out of their own half and provide forwards Alice and Tash with their first chance to threaten.

The game settled down to a hard fought midfield battle with neither team really able to fashion clear cut chances. Julie and Ellie both cut out some dangerous Nomads forays and Kirsten, Alice and Tash had good runs that couldn't quite be converted.

The deadlock finally broke a few minutes before half time when a through ball from Kirsten found AI who had ghosted behind the Nomads defence to be unmarked in plenty of space on the penalty spot and duly dispatched the ball with some power into the bottom right corner past a helpless keeper.

Nomads charged back down the pitch and immediately won a short corner but the defence held firm. Despite continued pressure from Nomads half-time came with a 1-0 score line.

The second half started more brightly for South as they had a number of dangerous breaks and Kirsten came very close to doubling the lead only to see her shot graze the wrong side of the post with the keeper beaten. Shortly after they did score from a short corner Kirsten shot at left post and Kendra slipped across the line to deflect it into the right hand corner.

The lead seemed to settle the nerves and South began to play their best hockey with Catherine and Hayley beginning to run the midfield and Rhi making a couple of dangerous overlaps down the left hand wing. But as the midday heat began to tell Nomads fought back and keeper Loopy had to make a sharp diving saving to her right (followed by a bow to the cheering spectators).

South had some dangerous breaks with Kendra and Liles but towards the end it was a defensive struggle for South with Kathryn in particular making some great tackles. The game ended on one of the South breaks though as a short corner was given for a foot in the circle as the time expired to the delight of the traveling throng of side line supports. Despite three attempts South couldn't add a gloss to the score line leaving the game as a 2-0 victory and a season's record of 20 games, 19 wins, 1 loss outscoring opponents by 80 goals to 7.

With the cup presented and winners medals hanging around the necks of players from both ladies teams the partying and champagne kicked off into the evening.
