Nearly But Not Quite

John Greaves

The match started late after a prolonged debate about the weather. Very British. Somehow the conditions seemed to inspire the home team to one of their best performances of the season, only losing out in the final five minutes. The frustrated runaway league leaders eventually grabbed two goals from short corners to take the win.

Throughout the game the Cambridge South defence stood firm, with man of the match Alan Radford shrugging off injuries to repel all boarders supported by his henchmen Jan Brynjolffssen, Howard Steed, David Bridge and rampaging left back Ian Glover making a welcome return. They all got stuck in, blocking, tackling, making decisive clearances again and again. Midfielders came back to defend, and sound marshalling of attackers away from goal, especially by wingers Owen Vaughan and Andy Thomas, took the pressure off.

The midfield were not to be outdone, with Stu Creed and Joe Whitaker particularly influential in the centre, and Simon Jelley popping up everywhere. The attack had their moments, with Boris playing the target man role effectively. We got a good few crosses in, but couldnt convert.

Leadenham scored from a short corner on the stroke of half time but couldnt get any more until agonisingly close to the end. The home team suffered for the cause with skipper Greaves taking a rising shot on the chest and Boris at times playing with head, bottom...whatever he could get in the way of the ball.

South did get a deserved equaliser from open play as Alan Radford, summoned into attack, shot from distance only to see goal hanger Greaves adopting Frampton-esque tactics to guide the ball into the net from three feet out.

This only served to annoy Leadenham, who pressurised the home goal sufficiently to win numerous short corners, from which they managed to convert their final two into goals to run out 3 - 1 winners.

A good game, played in positive spirit, followed by excellent teas amongst the rugby throng.
