M5 0-6 St Ives Mens 5

Against all the odds, we managed to get a minimum M5s' squad out for our first league match of the season so far.

Our core 5s' squad was supplemented by enthusiastic newcomers Conor Wilkins from Long Road and David Rutherford from Bonnie Scotland plus some welcome support from the M4s following their cancelled match.

We got off to a good start, putting the St Ives defence under immediate pressure, but soon conceded an early goal followed by another just before half-time.

The half-time team talk (which I happy delegated to the experts - Boris & Jack!) must have done the trick as we came out fighting. The back four of David B, Ky, Maurice and Nick held firm and Shahzad was quick to pick up any shots that came through the defensive line. The midfield of Owen, David R, Conor and Howard made good use of the space that St Ives were allowing us to push the ball forward to Boris and Shahbaz, but alas we couldn't seem to score that elusive first goal that would have lifted us before St Ives hit back with a further four goals.

We clung on desperately despite rapidly tiring legs and a clash of heads that left David B with a nasty head wound which was quickly attended to by our resident medic, David R. In true South style David B insisted on carrying on to the end of the game before making the short trip to the very conveniently located Addenbrookes A&E to be stitched up.

A great first outing for the 5s which was in no way reflected by the score line. Well done guys!

For playing on despite picking up a nasty bash on the head
