Another good win for the 4ths

John Greaves

The final friendly before the league season commences was a lively affair for a "composite" Cambridge South squad vs Bury St Edmunds 4ths. VC Boris Lossy was a man on a mission from the start, providing the short corner for midfield lynchpin Ian Marshman to hammer his shot home, and shortly after he grabbed the second himself...a skilful shot in from a Marshman pass.

At this stage skipper John Greaves decided to turn up (travelling back specially from the far north), only to see Boris demonstrating yet more panache, with a dribble and long range reverse-stick piece of perfection to make it three-nil. By now South were on a roll, with the defensive wall all paying their part, notably spring chicken Nick Georgiadis tirelessly snuffing out attacks on our right.

The Whittaker/Marshman/Rosselli/Dijkstra/Ali (not all at once) midfield were bossing matters, starting some great flowing moves for Boris and Rupert Espley to turn into goal scoring opportunities. Bury got one back though just to show us not to be too confident after a good move.

This was more than enough for the captain, who came on, buzzed around, and demonstrated his usual knack of scoring from five yards while others wondered here the ball was, this time off a Joe Whittaker shot that rebounded back off the keeper for John to spank it firmly into the back board.

The second half was enlivened by the appearance of newcomer Matthew Huchu who gave a cameo for twenty mins involving a few long mazy dribbles, some decisive tackling and effective running to disrupt the increasingly confident Bury team, who sensed South tiring and camped in the home half, getting two more goals near the end. The result was never in doubt, mainly because the final whistle went just as Bury's third goal went in from a short corner.

Nevertheless this was a good team performance for Cambridge South, who kept trying to play good hockey throughout, always looking to attack and help each other. Div 5NW will be a challenge, requiring better control, less hesitancy on the ball and firmer tackling...but a 100% start to 2014-2015, followed by our first visit to the new "home" club house at Cantabs RFC isn't a bad way to go into the league season.
