Umpa Lumpa squats, Jelly Babies and some Champagne Hockey

Jen Kingslake

Despite Captain Cath abandoning her team (serious lack in commitment there) and the very mediocre Vice-Captain Jen (me) stepping in to skipper - the Ladies' 2s had a very enjoyable game and didn't get totally slaughtered! Woo hoo!

After a rousing warm up led by Coral (I was faffing with paperwork and trying not to lose the pitch keys), the Ladies' 2s were raring to go. Luckily the goalie kit and Pip arrived just in time -  we had no subs so this was fairly crucial! The Peterborough team looked pretty young and speedy - so we made the decision to focus on zonal marking and talking to each other so we didn't all get completely exhausted in the first five minutes.

The Ladies' 2s had first push back and did some lovely passing and triangle work. We also did some pretty good interceptions too - we are starting to get used to the bouncy pitch and used this to our advantage when stopping some fast and bouncy Peterborough hits. Vanessa was in a great position up front and she made some good advances towards our attacking D, but unfortunately the Peterborough defence were quick to stop us in our tracks. There were a good few counter attacks too but our defence were equally as strong (even with Serin's gammy hand!) but right at the end of the first half a stray foot resulted in a short corner for Peterborough. The whole South team were told to leg it back into the D as soon as the ball was injected but luckily the Peterborough shot went wide and the first half ended 0-0.

After nearly OD-ing on Jelly Babies at half time the L2s' started off well but lost concentration slightly. This lead to an early goal from the competition which knocked morale slightly and made us aware of our achy legs. However, we persevered and were awarded our first short of the match. South got into our positions and, after what felt like half an hour of Peterborough sorting their hair and makeup for the occasion (and putting on their fancy face guards), Lauren made a lovely injection to Emma who did a cheeky slip to Vanessa. Unfortunately the ball was a little too cheeky though and ended up going wide, but it was a good effort anyhow!

Our second short was better but sadly no conversion - Emma made a great sweep straight at goal but the person with the padding unfortunately got in the way. Steph followed up with a counter attack but the defence were on it. A second goal from Peterborough was the wake up call we needed and we got our act together towards the second half of the second half, and the final result ended 0-2 to Peterborough.

All in all it was a fun match though - the Ladies 2s are definitely coming along well and we all felt our training had improved our game - especially when channelling the ball wide and using triangles to get around the defence.

Man of the Match was awarded to Coral for constantly pestering the Peterborough side and making some lovely tackles. Unfortunately I ended up with a Lemon for what was described as the 'Umpa Lumpa Squat' - a very bizarre movement caused by me trying to stop a ball that was going in-between my legs, but while doing that, both my legs slipped out from underneath me and made it look as though I was trying to sit on the ball whilst falling backwards. So attractive!!

Well played everyone! A good effort by all.
