S'now Joke

Laura Ludlow

Here was our second attempt at beating St Ives within a couple of weeks, after the match on 31st January had to be abandoned when the snow started falling so heavily that it became difficult to see the other players. We were without Kim again this week, but at least this time she had a better excuse than picking up her new car!

We knew we could beat St Ives and we wanted to make the additional trip on a Sunday worthwhile so we started with good intensity. The passing was sharp, slicing through the St Ives midfield and leaving them standing. Jess calmly slotted home the first goal and we settled into our game. A crucial goal-line clearance from Diane kept us in front.

We were awarded a short corner. So far, so good. Unfortunately for St Ives, their players were just too quick off the mark and kept breaking before Sophie pushed out. A green card for one of their players, who was apparently quite aggravated. It was all too much for Laura, who had to strip off in the middle of the pitch (although joyfully managed to avoid being Lemon of the Match - more on that below). On the fourth attempt, we managed to play the short corner but failed to score. Quite disappointing after all that build up!

St Ives had a brief attacking spell and made it into our twenty-five. Georgie creditably decided to thwart their attack with her head. She bravely declared she was fine and we played on. Minutes later, Georgie picked up the ball outside their twenty-five and made a strong run through to the top of the D. A cracking shot and we all watched as the ball deflected off the St Ives' defender and looped over the keeper into the roof of the net. “Was that a goal?” asked Georgie, unwittingly earning herself Lemon of the Match.

A final attacking spell in the first half and Laura slotted away a well-timed pass by Sophie on the top of the D to make it 3-0 at half time.

We started the second half maintaining the pressure of the first half. By now, Serin was playing in her third or fourth position of the match and putting in a performance that earned several MOM nominations. Jess made it 4-0 with another crisp strike and Sophie topped off a great South performance with some mazy dribbling and a strong strike so that it finished 5-0.

MOM went to new girl Emma M (who only moved to Cambridge this week and even thought about playing for City - the horror!) for great positioning and passing at left and right half. Six points from this weekend’s double header and second place in the league cemented. Bring on the last four games of the season!
