Teeing up the League Season

Tom Rosselli

The second match of the 2015/16 pre-season was away to Bishop's Stortford 2s. Jim's pre-match talk was all about keeping up the intensity from the start and forcing the opposition into early mistakes.

The game started evenly with each side trying a few probing attacks. The front three of Graham, Pearson and Ollie (with Owen rotating), supported by Mark and Jim made some good attacking plays early on and were unlucky not to get some very early goals. The defence also looked solid at the back with Graveling at centre half, the two Toms in the middle and Dave and Adam out wide. The opposition's early attacks were shutdown swiftly and Steve comfortably kept out the few shots that made it through.

After an initial back and forth, South managed to grab the lead through some quick passing and a snap shot from Mark. Maintaining the same intensity, South managed another goal within a few minutes, again Mark managing to get a quick shot away from the top of the D. South's movement was creating space all around the pitch. The third and fourth goals were similar again, this time coming to Graham and Owen respectively, grabbing nice tidy goals after some great attacking play. The defence managed to stop all the opposition attacks, Graveling was intercepting most of the long balls that they were trying to play and Anns was calm and commanding at the back.

4-0, half time; good start. In the second half Jim wanted to play using a half-court press, to keep the discipline up and try to control the flow of the game. South managed to keep the opposition contained for the first ten minutes but Stortford were keen to win the second half. They switched to three up-front and were far more aggressive in their attacking play. A few hairy moments in the D meant Steve was put to work again. Eventually they managed to grab a goal back with a quick counter attack and some neat passing to their centre forward. For a few minutes South were uneasy losing some of their structure at the back, but no more goals were conceded.

In the final few minutes South managed to grab two more goals from some nice short corner routines. Pearson slotted one into the bottom corner and Graham deflected another in at the near post.
