Cambridge Competition

Georgie Howling

With the wind and the rain came our close rivals, Cambridge University, who currently stand at the top of the league. Looking young and spritely, their squad was large in numbers and had youth on its side. But with nothing we hadn't got, we concentrated on the task at hand.

South came out utilising our skills and determination, maintaining possession in order to win two consecutive short corners within minutes. With fast reactions, the opportunity to convert into a goal came with energy and panache from Elaine, giving us a one goal advantage; a crucial display of skills at this stage in the game.

With spirits high and the University feeling a bit knocked back, the fight continued through to the second half. As a team everyone was running to cover players and fighting for possession of the ball. Our committed coach, Georgie Hurford (who was on the sideline, not the pitch, due to a last-minute injury, winning her Lemon of the game), was offering tips and advice throughout play, encouraging the team and pushing us to clear the ball into free space.

The second half bought a battle to defend our lead. Lou C was leading the fight, stopping an aerial shot on goal during a short corner with a smashing stick save, to name but one memorable moment. Our chances in attack were not fleeting, Rebecca K rivaling the keeper to a one-on-one shortly before Jess came in to take her out, resulting in an injury for the University keeper.

The last fifteen minutes bought a very strong fight from our opponents, finally earning themselves a goal for their hard work. It cannot go without saying that we made them work hard, giving them a challenge across the entire pitch. Loopy was outstanding as goalie, keeping them on par throughout the game, thoroughly deserving her MOM title.

As a team there was little to no chat-back to the umpires, which was a celebration in itself but the real outcome was the 1-1 result against the top team in the league. So here's to South for snatching those points and being a top team! Congrats!
