Desmonded

With Storm Desmond in full force and Serin's hangover held at bay only by anti-nausea medication, it was time to push back for the last league tie in 2015.

South got off to a strong start, showing promise with some early breaks by our midfield and front line. Sadly it wasn't long before the tables turned and our near-top-of-the-table opponents started to command the play. The South defence showed great confidence with passing 16s out to the wing - lovely linking play by Valerie, Louisa and Janette out to Serin and Julie. Sadly, Valerie was lost to injury (hope the thumb heals up soon!) and took up sidleine support instead.

Midfield showed their tenacity, with lots of running by Dani, Grace and Hannah. Cath showed true commitment, really putting her whole body into the game (frozen peas will do the trick!) and even the back left goalpost got some action (thankfully - that ball was totally going wide, wasn't it??) Ultimately City went to half-time goal-less.

After stand-in Cap'n Hannah said a few words, Cath saw her moment to shine only to get stagefright. Being unable to "use her words" led her to well-earned citrus victory after the match.

After such a rousing speech, South were pumped up for the resumption of play. The savvy side passes continued, some excitement when Esme and Grace looked to drive the ball forward. Emma South made some excellent runs up front to keep City on their toes, and there were tantalising moments when the ball got very close to a classic Lauren tap-in near the goal line. Sadly, it wasn't to be and with City in full attacking force after their half-time pep talk, we spend much of the second half under constant pressure in defence. Of course, our ladies rose to the challenge and City were held off time and again. I particularly enjoyed the strong step-in-front-and-sweep-to-sidelines move being practised with such success by Julie, Louisa and Janette. With such relentless attacking, there were some strikes that got through. But why worry about those when our goalie is happy to clown around and do twirls in the D, miraculously deflecting City's efforts? Serin particularly enjoyed the moment when the goalie had no clue where the ball had gone, only for it to drop onto her helmet and disappear again, prompting a swift pirouette and a chance save with her back.

This mysterious magical force that was keeping the ball out of South's net (and keeping those braving the sub-hurricane gusts on the sideline entertained) only further frustrated the City strikers, and some solid shots finally secured them a 3-0 win. But South took a moral win, holding this strong side to a draw for the first 60% of the match and doing it whilst remaining sporting and cheerful.

Post-match, Cath cemented her lemon-worthiness having put on the onesie only to add, "Where's the hood? It hasn't got one... Oh, there it is!" "No, that's your hoody, Cath."

With such great comedy on their side, South 2s leave for the Christmas break with spirits high and looking to move up from their current mid-table position in the New Year.

Brilliant goalkeeping (even if it hit you on the head!)

Too tired to finish her speech at halftime - and she wasn't even hungover!
