Not a Bad Start to 2016…

Georgie Jefferies

So the time had come to emerge from the Christmas food coma for the first game of the season. Some of us arrived promptly; others slumbered along late, no doubt due to finishing the last of their wine from the previous night (Fairlie claiming lost car keys).

It took a while to come out of the food coma and Huntingdon were out in full force, working in ‘hunter pack’ style at the back. It was a tightly fought ten minutes with some great lead runs from Flix up front on the left and some good positioning from Elaine leading to a series of short corners. A right slip and back into the penalty spot got South on the scoreboard. As expected Kim tried to claim the goal but it was Elaine who was first to get her name on the score sheet.

South’s spirits were high and continuous pressure was put on Huntingdon defence, resulting in a reverse stick goal for Flix quickly followed up by another from Georgie J. Huntingdon had a few chances and were strong on the break. Lou was determined to get in on the action and threw in a good dummy dive only to miss the player and the ball – her knees are not in a good way!

Despite the Huntingdon D becoming very crowded, South worked well for each other and Elaine’s drive and determination helped her score another goal. With a short corner given before the half time whistle it was an opportunity to take it to 5-0. Kim pounced and scored – the crowd (Myla) went wild (although definitely a lack of the usual prancing celebration)!

Half time chats from coach Nige were optimistic and there was talk of making it to double figures with greater use of the left wing.

Loopy liked to keep things interesting in the second half, and with an attempted boot up middle of the pitch hoped someone would make a run for a loose ball. However, mince pie fatigue had really started to set in and no-one even got near! Elaine converted from another short corner, taking the goal queen crown off Sophie for the afternoon. It was all too much for Fairlie and with a solid smack to the ankle she hobbled off to take in the days events from the sideline.

Overall a strong first performance for the first game back- well done South!
