Hard Work at the Abbey

Lottie Alves

With only eleven players this week, after the Ladies 1s raided our squad to make up their own low numbers, we had our work cut out against Nomads' team of thirteen.

We took a while to get into the first half, with Nomads starting off strong. We soon got our heads into the game though, playing some really nice hockey, with quick triangle passes and great runs. We were unfortunate that the score line remained nil-nil at the end of the half, meaning it was all to play for in the second period.

We started the second half strongly, with several chances but we couldn't convert any into goals. As the match wore on, we gradually began to tire and the spare legs Nomads had began to tell, with more pressure at our end. After successfully defending a couple of short-corners (great work Meg, Pip, Lucy and Louisa) and getting the ball into Nomads' D, a break by a Nomads forward and the tired legs of South meant that, with ten mins left, Nomads scored.

Rallying together, South pushed back hard. After some great runs and play by Dani, Emma So, Roisin and Serin, the ball made its way to Lauren on the P spot who found the goal and levelled the score. The last five minutes saw more chances on goal but we couldn't quite make it a win.

Great play by all involved, with lots of votes for MOM: Lauren (great goal), Roisin (great play in the centre), Emma Sm (great running and creating lots of chances), Serin (great all round play) and Pip (great defending), with Lucy winning thanks to her excellent defending skills. LOM went to Dani who, after an eventful Friday evening getting home from London, ended up arriving at the match six minutes before start time (even Pip was there before then!)

For missing the last train home the night before the match and arriving only 6 minutes before the start.
