Sometimes Games Really Are of Two Halves

Danny McCree

After last week's victory against Peterborough hopefully putting us back on to out winning streak, spirits were high going into the game against the team where it had started!

All this excitement carried through into the changing rooms, where a game of changing room hockey commenced. The intensity escalated and the ball pace increased until it all got a bit too much for Dom Nelson, who sent a ball flying directly at the spectators' heads. A risky move with a bare eleven and Oven managing the subs.

Out on the pitch it soon became clear that the wind would be a significant factor, and so (maintaining his form of bring a consistent tosser) Coops once again won the toss and made the tactical decision to start with the wind at our backs, carrying us forward to victory!

And so it began. The first half showed a strong South side, with Dom and Dan Loy grabbing themselves a goal each, both worked from excellent play but with a slightly scrappy finish, and Chris Walsh controlling the centre of the pitch. The new defensive short corner routine worked effectively ("We'll just go with a 'normal' this time.") and our single short corner looked promising.

The half time team talk was all very promising, with the team all happy with their performance and confident going into the second half. However in the words of Oven, "It's not over yet…"

Within a couple of minutes of the restart, Leadenham had got a goal back, South staggered by the wind now in their faces. The wind wore down the team and with no substitutes the second half became unpleasantly defensive as South began to obviously tire, with only Walsh and 'special pirate' Menzies keeping some semblance of their first half performance. A second goal was conceded to a short corner, to bring the final score to 2-2.

When your team only has eleven players, don't flick a ball into a teammate's face in the changing rooms and then hamstring yourself after fifteen minutes.
