Third Time Unlucky

John Greaves

A true six pointer against Wisbech, twice postponed until the sun decided to shine. Sadly, it only shone on the home team. Cambridge South managed to score three goals for the first time this season; unfortunately all were into our own net.

In the first half, the sides were only separated by a neat Howard Steed deflection close to the goal line from a short corner shot. Otherwise it was an even game, with South unfortunate not to score at the correct end on a number of occasions. We had pressure, with Wilco Dijkstra, Nick Greaves and Ian Marshman all driving forward well from midfield and winger Tom Steed being a nuisance to any Wisbech player who came close. This resulted in the Wisbech keeper making some good saves to keep us out.

Stand in South keeper Andy Thomas also saved effectively a good few times but managed to get on the scoresheet shortly after half time with a tap in of his own off a wickedly deflected shot from close range through a melee. His defenders mostly kept the ball away from danger, with man of the match James Siddorns standing out once again for his robust tackling and decisive clearances. At the other end, Skipper Greaves had a couple of shots saved, as did Pip Ho and Nick Greaves. South pressurised the Wisbech goal, earning more short corners than we had had in the season to date, but couldn't convert.

Mid-way through the second half, South were visibly tiring. The home side wrapped things up with another Howard Steed bobbler as he tried to stop a quickfire Wisbech effort reaching its target.

Ah well…onwards and……onwards.
