As usual we all met in the men's changing room for our pre-match 'chat': today's started with the usual gloating from certain players who had had a restful and early night in preparation. Others, however, kept their eyes firmly on the ground at this point, hoping their state of mind was not brought to the teams' attention… but nothing gets past us! We spotted her sat in the middle of the floor trying so hard to put her shin guards on but failing! Morning Lou… Even though it was 1pm.

This slow start from 'The Boss' would perhaps make you think that it would bring back the tears and cards from previous encounters with Haverhill in seasons gone by but, nope, not today. That is all behind us now - new season and all that! So, ready and pumped, off we went out to pitch side.

Whistle went and our running began… Wow, look at these clean, sharp, accurate passes! (Looks like we were actually listening in training on Thursday!) A classic reverse strike from Sophie got our first goal in the bag! Shortly followed by goal numero two! Then a third… Half time.

We still have it as we go into the second half, looking strong as a team! Team work makes the dream work… Laura completes her goals for the day with her fourth in the back of the net. Other goals from Elaine, Kim and Sophie helped us to our 8-0 victory. Some really strong midfield play got Heather the votes for man of the match, but it really was the performance of the whole team (of fifteen) that came together at Fortress Long Road.

Some of my personal highlights of the game were:

  • Graham's stunning substitutions: smooth, slick and worked exceptionally well, especially the threat of subbing you off if he doesn't see you running back - aye aye, captain [coach]!

    • Lou taking a 'quick pass' which resulted in her attempt to just run straight through me…

    • Loopy put some pressure on herself when she was so excited the ball was coming near her so she ran to the top of the D and did her classic slide tackle… Phew, she nailed it.

    • We couldn't have done it without our supporters…thanks - not forgetting Arthur's debut.
