And We're Off! L2s Register First Win of the Season

Lauren Brown

The Ladies 2s met for their second league game of the season with Captain Dani’s threat of a twenty press-ups at training forfeit for losing adding an extra incentive to immediately bounce back from the opening day loss to Nomads.

South started brightly with lots of early pressure on the Haverhill D but some typical early season style passing gave Haverhill several let offs and the heavy possession just couldn’t be converted into a deserved opening goal. After fifteen minutes the forward line was rotated to enable everyone to receive a pep-talk from manager, Jack, encouraging the forwards to get into wider positions.

This paid off almost immediately, with the breakthrough goal coming from excellent running by Lucy and Dani down the right wing, finding Lauren in the right hand corner, who put in a cross across the Haverhill D to Flo, who happily smashed the ball into the back of the net for 1-0 to South. The rest of the half carried on in the same manner, with lots of South pressure but no more goals. Half time provided valuable jelly baby eating opportunities and time to regroup and establish exactly who should be playing where in our new formation!

After a first half devoid of short corners there were plenty in the second half, giving Flo and Emma-Rose lots of opportunities to take shots - both at the goal as well as at each other(!) Flo was very unfortunate not to get her second goal of the game with a beautiful curling chip coming in to land just the wrong side of the left hand cross bar. The second goal finally came with Emma-Rose finishing a brilliant flowing move down the right wing from a quick break from the South half. It remained two-nil at the end, perhaps not reflective of the L2s’ dominance in the game but a good result nonetheless.

Meg pretty much had the Lemon vote sealed from the off - turning up with only one shoe and having to go and retrieve it from the streets of Cambridge - and it would have taken some strong lemon-worthy actions to topple her from first place on the lemon podium. Retrospective votes may have gone to the creator of the weirdest garlic bread in the world, the focal point of an eclectic match tea reminiscent of early Cantabs days!

Man of the match votes were spread across the team, with votes for Meg, Lucy, Emma-Rose and Flo. Roisin, however, took home the prize for her “excellent ball skills”, amongst other reasons.

And so the L2s can now look forward to training without any press-up forfeits looming over them, and the opportunity to register more early season points against Newmarket next week.

Dropping one astro shoe en route and having to cycle back to get it.
