L1s and the Elusive Goal

Ellie Edwards

On a crisp, autumnal morning the Ladies 1s headed down to the fortress that is Long Road to face Huntingdon 1s. After a brief chat in the changing rooms from our interim captain, Sophie, mainly about why there were so many chairs in there, we headed out pumped and raring to go.

What seemed like an age after the warm up, the first whistle blew. Huntingdon put a lot of pressure on South but with strong defending from Emma and Diane, South were able to hold down the fort and keep “Hunters” at bay. South looked strong in the first half with some great passing between Kim, Heather and Amalia up the pitch, but the home team were unable to find the back of the net. At half time it was still nil-nil.

With the compulsory jelly babies in hand and a focussed team talk on the go, South came out after half time in for the win. Turning the tables on Huntingdon and putting extreme pressure on them, Laura found the backboard with a cracking goal. 1-0.

After breaking the goal barrier South were hot onto our opposition, creating numerous chances with multiple short corners but narrowly missing out each time.

As Lydia can be seen from afar at the defensive twenty-five watching eagerly for a goal, Ellie decides that it would be a great time for Lydia to have a piece of the action too, with a shocker of a pass that ends up on the Huntingdon forward's stick. Well thats LoM sorted. With a well practiced three-on-one, South dug deep and defended well - big hand to Diane and Lydia for some cracking saves and tackles - managing to regain control and keep the sheet clean.

After a regroup, South pressed on with Sophie scoring her first goal of the game. Two-nil. South grew in strength up the pitch and continued to press hard until the final whistle blew, where finally Sophie found her second(ish) goal of the game off a defender's stick to round off a great game for South, maintaining our position at the top of the table.
