Keep Calm and, Well, Carry On Regardless

Lou Cantwell

South L1s' unbeaten streak continued this week with a seven-one win away at Newmarket. South started strongly and put the ball in the net within the first minute. I can’t remember who scored in which order but by the end it was Penniket (2), McComish (2), Small (2), Cooil (1).

We quickly racked up another two goals before Newmarket scored from a sensational rising strike after exploiting an umpire-induced hole in the midfield. Ho hum. We got another to bring the three goal lead back just before half time and went into the jelly babies four-one up.

South put some strong and zingy passages of play in throughout, to tuck away another three neat goals in the second half. Special mention has to go to Amalia, who put in a storming performance in midfield that attracted the attention of spectators and officials alike, and to the Fairlie-meister, whose clairvoyant powers were put to good use when she predicted the trajectory of an ambitious long ball hit at our goal to anticipate the rebound off the post and then snowplough her way through the onrushing Newmarket to turn defence into attack.

Fair to say, however, that this was another proper team performance from the L1s, building a result in conditions that were less than optimal. Whilst we’re on the subject, the return of the Lemonsie was, at least for one of us, perhaps far from ideal…

What we learned today:

1) Blythe can fly.

2) In Newmarket, two equals four.

3) Kim's supportive and caring side has been publicly acknowledged.

"Keep calm and carry on" team talk not necessarily put into practice on the pitch and getting carded. Also for catching the ball…
