A Frosty Start

Katie Gibson

Saturday morning saw many pitches frozen but the Ladies 2s struggled through and travelled to St Ives for what they knew would be a tough game. A wee mix up, involving the group meeting at two different park and rides, meant the day was off to an interesting start!

Spirits high and layers on, the team took to the pitch braving the elements. The effects of which proved just too much for one player who, confused by the cold, decided to start the half facing her teammates. Very much offside, and soon joined by the St Ives team, the unanimous Lemon ran to the correct half of the pitch.

The first half was impressive on all accounts. The girls were playing well as a team, employing great movement of the ball up the wings with some very impressive and imposing runs by Emma-Rose and Kath. Despite everyone's efforts, the team went one-nil down after a strong burst of attacking play by the St Ives side. The girls continued throughout the first half with fluid passing, and notable play by Roisin and Dani in the centre meant the team were able to keep pushing forward to pressurise the opposition. After some hard ground was won against a solid St Ives defence, Izzy was able to slip in an equaliser through the keeper's legs.

With the score level starting the second half, the L2s fought well and faced some strong play by the opposing side. The St Ives team were playing well and our gain lines were hard to build on. However, the team came together and worked well in units up and down the pitch. Great communication meant that passes were well received by the strikers who were able to really challenge St Ives' defence. Unfortunately, the second half did not go our way and St Ives scored two more goals. Having said this, the team rose to the challenge throughout the match and made St Ives fight for the win. It was a fairly even match in all and leaves the girls geared up and ready for next week.
