Half Court Pressure…

Flix Renny

We were a bit cautious at the start, having lost a couple players to illness/injuries and a certain player suffering from a Christmas night out…Robyn M(c). Also, Lou managed to fall over before the match even started. But we still had a strong squad and it was good to see Amalia back after a break.

We had a strong first half and managed to keep most of the possession in the attacking end of the field. However, Peterborough definitely kept a lot of pressure on our attack and they used the half court press to their advantage. We also noticed that Peterborough were man-marking, which made it difficult to get clear shots off. Nevertheless, Hannah used her speed to get past the defence in a break and scored our first and much-needed goal with a spectacular top corner drag flick. (Well, nearly… Ed.)

At the start of the second half we showed some beautiful passing around the back, keeping possession well. There must have been something in the pre-match pizza because Hannah and Flix (the only players to eat it) were the first to score. Flix’s finish came after a deflection following skills and a strong shot from Sophie.

Laura then managed to further establish the lead, scoring from a ball played in from Kim, bringing it to 3-0. Laura's second goal was a powerful straight strike from a short corner. Then there was another textbook short corner – Laura hitting to the right post where Kim deflected in. It was beautiful.

Other highlights:

  • One of the opposition ran into Lou’s head.

  • There was an aerial; very exciting!

  • Lots of nice one-twos and passing in triangles.

  • South’s short corners throughout the game were mostly very clean. And we didn't concede any!

  • Good sideline support.

  • Lowlight - we had an agonising wait for pizza at match teas but there was way too much to go around, which made up for it.

  • Flix was voted Lemon, hence why I’m writing this report (and referring to myself in the third person). Her/My votes were for trying (and failing) to steal Hannah’s goal and for theatrically falling on my arse in the D for a second week in a row. Kim was close behind, gaining a few votes for losing a dog shortly before the match. Loopy also received a vote for not touching the ball but this was repealed as apparently she did touch the ball once…but I’m still not convinced.
