Eyes on the Ives

Georgie Howling

As tempting as it is to write… "We won!! Wohooo!! The End." I will divulge a few of the sideline secrets for those not present. Need I tell you that this was an important one… Our position in the table has been well-respected but challenged at times, with our route to Div 2 often losing traction towards the end of a season. With the promotion becoming a closer reality, this match stood to lay the foundations of what we are yet to complete!

The details… We played…we won! But more importantly, we played well as a team. Our effort was unfaltering in the warm up, the passion continued into the game and our drive helped us maintain possession… Be it for approximately 80% of the first half, alas, with no goal to show for it! We had a few unfortunately-timed sweeps at goal from Flix, which didn't quite make it in. However, it showed our potential and urged us on… Dedicated commitment from all the forwards and midfield saw us winning more frequent short corners… ‘If you cant beat the defence, gain an advantage of them through short corners’. our wise manager told us at half time! Thank you Graham…you were right! And with a well-practiced L1s’ favourite…a finish that is turning into an expected outcome after the mixed match performance a few weeks earlier, saw Kim slick the ball into the bottom corner, securing the one-nil scoreline that saw us win the game (and later a St Ives discussion on how that could ever have managed to penetrate their defence!)

The end of the essay…leaves me only to express the relief of the team. After hard graft and dedication, we came away with something to be proud of. Do not let me forget LoM (taking the majority and even her own vote)…which was awarded to our trusty captain, not standing for ‘leader of many’ but instead, our lemon; after a glimpse of an equaliser when Lou kicked the ball in the D, offering St Ives the ‘advantage over our defence’ they had clearly been fighting for!! Wohooo, not only is Lou a good leader but she is also good at stopping the ball (with her stick!), securing a clean sheet and the win at the final whistle! A massive effort from the team at the back for continually keeping St Ives' attacks at bay…Robyn, Diane, Emma and Lou!

"YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!" as I might say

"We are top of the league, we are top of the league!!!" - Robyn

"We wanted it more!" - Lou

"A slap on the back (literally)…" - Ellie

"A high five" from Lydia

Phewwww…
