Half a Game, Lots of Action

Kath Atkin

It was a fairly overcast, cool Saturday morning when the Ladies 2s hit the changing rooms ready for the usual team talk and match preparation. A wave of excitement hit the team as Serin arrived with a Hobbs bag in hand and announced that after weeks of falling over in training and matches, she had now bought some new astros. After a long discussion about the buying process, Serin raising her concerns that ladies' astros only come in very bright girly colours, she re-laced her new bright pink Grays Astros and was ready to start warming up. Serin was receiving comments from the L1 spectators on the sideline about said new astros. After a full team warm up in one of the Addenbrookes car parks we were ready to start the match.

To our surprise, Newmarket had only arrived with eleven players and had no keeper, therefore elected to play with a kicking back who wore a magical red bib. South started strongly, making lots of attacking play and moving the ball around the pitch, and it was not long before Izzy managed to score the L2s' first goal with a nice reverse flick. This was shortly followed by another South attack on goal in which the ball hit the foot of the one of the Newmarket players on the line so South were awarded a penalty flick. Emma-Rose stepping up as Newmarket’s kicking back put on her helmet. Emma-Rose smoothly pushed the ball into the left corner of the goal; another South goal.

The half continued with more South attacks and lots more play around the pitch with some great switching of the ball, as well as Kate making some lovely forward runs. Kendra was quick to add to her growing goal total and scored two goals in a row, one a lovely flick into the back of the goal and the other a scoop shot over the kicking back's stick. Play continued with Newmarket making the occasional break into South half which was nicely defended by Dani, Meg, Serin, Mel, Roisin and Kath. With South using the press to their advantage, Lauren was able to stop the ball just outside of the D, dribble it in and score, making it five-nil to South.

With the South attack continuing, Eimear was running at full stretch to beat a Newmarket player to the ball and ended up banging heads with this player. Both hit the floor but were able to walk off the pitch and take five minutes' break. South were able to take advantage of Newmarket only having ten players and Lauren snuck another goal (although this may have actually been an own goal). Before the half was over, Kendra managed to score her hat-trick goal by striking the ball from the top of the D into the left hand corner beyond the kicking back's reach. She then went on to apologise to several Newmarket players.

In the last attack of the half South were able to gain their first short corner of the game and, with the team prepped, Izzy stepped up to the top of the D ready for her straight strike. However, as she did so she ended up hitting one of the Newmarket defenders on the knee cap. The player went down, visibly in a lot of distress and pain so the umpires called half time.

As South walked off the pitch Newmarket gathered around their injured player, who appeared to be in a lot of distress, Izzy moaning that she was not awarded a second short corner. South quickly starting passing around the half time jelly babies during the usual team talk. Dani was then called to talk with the umpires, as Newmarket were asking to concede the game with two injured players out of the eleven that had started. With a little discontent in the air, South agreed to the game ending there. A somber South team walked off the pitch ready for pizzas, with Lydia managing to play the whole of the first half in goal without touching the ball. All players made it to teas without attending Addenbrookes and Serin decided that after all her new astros might be a little too big, but the shoes gained the seal of approval from her cat, Argy.
