Clash of the Titans…of 6NW(S)

John Greaves

A lively top of the table clash ended with honours even with a goal in each half.

The home team started the better of the two, belying the relative positions of the teams, but were unable to grab more than a single goal for all their pressure. This came from one of many forceful dribbles by Stu Creed, who wove his way to the backline and crossed invitingly for Pip Ho, lurking by the far post, to stab the ball in. South were unlucky not to get more as wave after wave of speedy passing moves, driven by the combination of central playmakers Ash/Pash/Marsh and wingers West/Creed/Steed went unrewarded. A James Siddorns thumper directly from a short corner whistled past the post to add to frustrations.

St Neots got back into the game in the second half as they took advantage of their route one superiority to miss out the midfield and get the ball into the home D time after time. Luckily for Cambridge South, keeper George Toynton was on top form and the twin Pillars of (Long) Rhode(s), JSidd and RockRadford, were stopping anything that came close, supported ably by wing backs Steed/Larkinson/Thomas. The only way St Neots were going to get an equaliser was through a breakaway long ball to their No. 62, in space for once. So that is what they did.

The game did get a bit grumpy as the number of umpires appeared to multiply, resulting in a couple of green cards given to the light blues and some opportunities for the actual umpires to debate some of the more obscure rules. This didn't stop South from continuing to attack with gusto but the winner proved elusive, with a Greaves thwack from one of many Alex Pashley through passes into the D disallowed for a slight infringement earlier in the move, as it crashed into the backboard. Even a South P-flick with one minute to go was twice saved, which was highly unlucky for man of the match, Tom Steed, who had been head and shoulders (metaphorically) above most others on the pitch with his skill, speed and tigerish attitude throughout.

By the end, a one-one draw was a fair result once again between these well-matched teams in the spring sunshine.
