A Frustrating Day

Lou Cantwell

Two cars out of three caught up in unexpectedly heavy lunchtime traffic getting out of Cambridge on the way to Pelicans turned out to be a bit of a marker of how the rest of the day would pan out. With the clock running down, Flix's last minute lift request prompted a minor detour through Ely. Kim's comedy moment of the season prompted two minutes of panic with a WhatsApp message claiming a flat tyre on Ellie's new machine. Cue much sniggering in the Slytherin car and six out of thirteen LOM votes. Notwithstanding, the remaining seven went to Flix…

As the scoreline suggests, this was an end-to-end game with two fairly evenly-matched teams demonstrating some skilful and fast-paced play. We lost count of the number of short corners awarded to both teams, and all the goals came from them. South went behind after only a couple of minutes to a well-executed PC from Pelicans. After this, however, we got into our stride and put in several attacks on the Peli's goal, which were either saved or narrowly slid the wrong side of the post. Our defence worked well, mopping up some strong attacks from Pelicans to go into half time with the score still at one-nil.

We came out strong in the second half, putting in some great passing moves and rapid passages of play and eventually got our reward with a lunging jab from Kim converting one of our PCs into the goal we were searching for. The game was balanced on a knife edge, with most of the play being centred on PCs in either D. South's defensive line up saw off several of them but a sweet strike from Pelican's outwitted us all with only ten minutes to go. South couldn't quite find the backboard in the remaining time and the game finished with a narrow defeat.

The L1s put in a brave and battling performance against a side sitting second in the league, who haven't messed up on their home turf all season. With our list of injuries growing over the last few weeks, we were missing a number of key players who have been central to our squad this year. Nonetheless, South dug deep and - despite the scoreline tipping in Pelicans favour - demonstrated why we're where we are in the league at the moment. We go into next weekend looking to secure the crucial points at Fortress Long Road. Watch this space.

Fantastic play in midfield - stepping up when we needed it and putting in a cracking performance. Also - for the champagne moment of a storming 50m drive, being taken out and scraping half her leg off, getting back up and carrying on to put in a sweet cross.

Putting in a mighty midfield performance and surpassing expectations given the need for the lift!

Not quite able to manage the drive to King's Lynn after a little too much post-exam celebrating on a Friday night…
